Over in the small principal bedroom, neutral-toned grasscloth wallpaper with a hint of gold creates a cosy vibe. Re-arranging the bathroom layout made the space practical, and it now features porcelain wall tiles and herringbone marble floor tiles.

Remodeling A Bathroom - BASCO Shower Enclosure

Say hello to luxurious baths with heated floors, marble stonework, high end plumbing fixtures, vanity cabinets, look like furniture, custom shower enclosures that look like walls of glass! Today's bathrooms have become private personal grottos where the homeowner can retreat and relax. We recently remodeled a bathroom and changed out the old neo-angled shower base and glass enclosure to a larger, luxurious walk- in tiled shower with multiple spray options. This new shower has a half wall and was designed for a BASCO brand shower enclosure. The process of planning, choosing and installing this BASCO custom glass enclosure was educational and it's my hope that this post will help anyone interested in building a custom shower and glass enclosure. Why BASCO? The reason we choose to use a BASCO enclosure on our project was that we were familiar with the high-end quality of the product and loved the whole frameless glass look. BASCO shower enclosures are consistently rated number one in quality and brand preference and have a broad selection of framed and semi-frameless glass enclosures, glass styles, glass doors and sliding glass doors that fit both shower and tub applications. BASCO has a large display at F.W. WEBB in Bedford, Massachusetts and we often send our clients there for framed and semi-frameless glass enclosures ideas. The second reason we chose BASCO was that we really like supporting a family owned, made in the USA, company. Design the Shower First: The best part of using a custom glass enclosure company like BASCO is that you can create any type, size or shape shower you want and then have the glass fit to it. BASCO can custom fit any style and size shower enclosure. BASCO uses factory trained and certified installers who can install glass panels with tolerances of 1/16 of an inch. They measure your shower space and can make glass panels fit perfectly, including cutting glass tapered panels to accommodate walls and floors that are not level or plumb. When designing your shower it is crucial that you communicate with your builder and plumber about your intention to use a custom glass enclosure.
There are several reasons for this and here is a list for you to consider:
1. Install solid blocking in the walls for the glass door and wall panels to be securely anchored. Install this blocking from the floor to the ceiling.
2. Where will you enter the shower and where should the showerhead go?
3. Glass panels are installed to 1/16 of an inch tolerance and can be tapered panels to accommodate walls and floors that are not level or plumb.
4. Glass panels cannot be cut to a bow in the wall. Ensure that your walls are flat.
5. Design your shower so your showerhead and body sprays do not spray directly onto a door or glass seam. Placement of these items is important to prevent leaks. [Note: Often the showerhead can be moved but not the door location -- share your plans with your tradesman.]
6. Pitch all thresholds into the shower for drainage.
7. Pitch all half walls into the shower.
8. Use solid surface thresholds. [Never use split tile thresholds]
9. Do you need now or in the future will you want an accessible shower? Easy wheelchair access? Shower Enclosure Selection Process: I always suggest that my clients visit the company website and if possible look at the product in a showroom. Choose the Door: You need to decide on how you want to enter your shower. BASCO offers sliding doors, swing doors and door-and-panel enclosures. If you plan on a sliding door or are building for accessibility you will want to look at the sliding door option. It easily glides out of the way and eliminates the clearance that a door swing requires. In order to have a sliding glass door you need to provide for where it will slide-- plan that into your design. All of the BASCO sliding doors feature what's known as a "Sta-Kleen" track. The Sta-Kleen track prevents dirt buildup while keeping water securely within the enclosure. I was impressed to see fifteen different metal finishes and ten glass style offerings: AquaGlideXP is an innovative protective coating applied to the glass to increase sheen and luster and prevent spotting, soap scum and mineral deposits.

Marble Tile Master Bathroom Shower Stall

A master bathroom with a large shower stall and Jacuzzi tub. Wall tile installed in this bathroom is a polished marble 12"x12" on the walls of the shower area. This wall tile includes a border of glass mosaic tile, a corner granite curb, granite bench seat installed on a "Better Bench" corner shelf for support. The shower also includes a recessed niche with. Exposed edges of the marble tile were all custom polished to match the finish of the tile surface. The thinset used to set the tile on the walls was Laticrete Gold 253. The floor tile was made of the same material, but 18"x18", and was installed on Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane underlayment. The Schluter Ditra was installed to the plywood subfloor with the same Laticrete Gold 253, but an unmodified thinset was used to set the tile on the ditra. The Tornado leveling system was used to help eliminate lippage between tiles.

Bathroom Remodeling - Demo and Building a debris chute

Part of our remodeling project requires us to remove the tile floor and underlayment beneath it. The tile floor needs to be removed so we can rework the plumbing drains for our new American Standard tub and shower fixtures.

Removing tile isn't an easy project and it can be difficult to do if the tile was set in concrete, commonly referred to as a "old mortar bed" method.. A mud bed job typically means that the tile is attached to 2 to 3 inches of concrete. Most tile is installed on underlayment which is a layer of material between the sub-floor and the finished floor. Years ago the most common material used by builders was 1/8-inch thick Luan plywood. Today, cement board and fiber cement board are the most common materials used. Before taking on this project make sure to protect your eyes and hands. Broken shards of ceramic tile is as sharp as glass. Remove The Trim: You will also need to remove all of the items sitting on top of the tile. such as baseboard and door casing trim, toilet, tub and vanity is applicable. After removing the toilet I recommend using a rubber plug or stuff a rag in the hole to keep out the methane gas small. When we are removing tubs, showers or sinks we make sure to shut off the water, drain the pipes and then cut and cap them with Sharkbite connectors.

this is also the time to cover any HVAC vents with a breathable filter to allow airflow but stop debris or if you do not need to have the vent working to completely cover it with tape and plastic. This prevents dust from entering the ventilation system.

Removing The Tile: For about $30, you can buy a floor scraper, a broom-size tool with an angled steel head used to strip off layers of flooring material. Often, the tool is useful for dislodging the flooring material from the adhesive. Choose a tile in the center of the room and break up by hitting it in the center with a hammer. The point here is to create a foot hold to get a pry bar of special tile scraper between the surrounding tiles and underlayment.

Using your scraper continue to break up tiles. On some floors, this one included, I've had excellent results by using a hammer drill with a chisel attachment. I use the chisel to break up and get under tiles and then pry them up to grab. Some floors come up easy and others hard. An old mortar bed floor sometimes needs to be broken up into pieces with a sledgehammer and then pried up.

I like to use a snow shovel to scoop up the broken tiles and discard them. If your lucky enough to get a dumpster under the window of the room your working at then a simple plywood sled is all you need to get the tiles into the dumpster. If you don't have that luxury you may need to build a debris chute.

Remove the Underlayment: After all the tile is removed and you've swept up it's time to focus on removing he underlayment plywood. Remove any visible screws that are accessible. Older floors will have ring shank nails as fasteners and often these nails were applied every six inches. I find the best practice is to use a large 48 inch long pry bar to lift up and work the edges of the underlayment. sometimes a flat shovel can assist in this process. Prepare The Sub-floor: Remove fasteners left in the sub-floor. Use the cat's paw, claw hammer or pry bar to remove the fasteners before moving on. Screws should be backed out if possible rather than pried loose because they will damage the sub-floor Clean up using a broom and shop vacuum. The wooden subfloor should be completely smooth and solid before installing a new floor. In my case I need to remove some of the sub-floor in order to access plumbing. If you do not have to remove any subfloor then you should re-nail or better yet, screw down the sub-floor to ensure you create a good connection and eliminate squeaks and movement. Removing the Subfloor If Needed: Many times the plumber needs a section of subfloor removed. In these circumstances you can sometimes remove just a few boards or cut the plywood subfloor at the nearest joist. Cutting subfloor boards or plywood is basically the same process. Make sure to use a nail puller to remove all the nails or unscrew and screws. then set your circular saw blade depth to the thickness of the sub-floor that you are removing. Make cuts along the center of the joist where you need to cut back to.

Complete Kitchen DIY Remodel With Ikea Cabinets

Ikea Cabinet planner, kitchen remodel. A total gut, new floors, new electric, recessed lighting, Ikea cabinets, granite countertops, new plumbing, sink/faucet, etc... All done by myself except for the granite countertops. Under cabinetry lighting not installed yet Took a very casual 13 weeks to complete. I guess that is what happens when you want to truly take your time and enjoy a remodel. Ok...so I was lazy a lot of the days. I had to work a full time job during this remodel! ;-P

Roughly $3200 to $3700 for the iKea cabinets. The granite counter tops was $1800 to $2000 or so. Flooring was about $350. The lights were $10 each- $100 or so with wire. Sink, Faucet and Range Hood Fan on eBay, plus plumbing supplies used Pex and Sharkbites (not a leak in 3 years yet!), wiring and supplies for about $600-$900. It was about a $5000-$7000 give or take. Still haven't found UNDER-CAB lighting to install. I want to be more green and go with energy efficient LED. But it all looks so COLD to my eyes. I prefer the warmth of incandescent, so I'm waiting for better lighting.
